Evaluation of Acheson silicon carbide for oxidation resistance environments
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a synthetic ceramic widely used worldwide, from basic industry applications to high tech components. Currently, SiC is considered a fundamental raw material due its chemical and physical properties: thermal shock resistance, high thermal conductivity, wear resistance, chemical inertness and others. One of these important properties is its good chemical resistance when subjected to oxidation environments, in comparison with raw materials such as silicon nitride and carbon. Despite this good performance, SiC usage is avoided for specific applications that demand higher oxidation resistance or long periods of exposition. This work presents an evaluation of different Acheson silicon carbide raw materials and possible approaches to improve refractory lifetime by means of raw material design.
