Solutions for the production of high‐quality hot‐pressed silicon carbide (HP-SiC) components

Hot‐pressed silicon carbide (HP-SiC) is a fully dense ceramic material that combines exceptional hardness, strength, and thermal stability. By applying pressure at high temperatures, manufacturers can achieve a near‐porosity‐free microstructure with super

Enhanced performance with SIKA® solutions for hot‐pressed silicon carbide

Kymera International offers a variety of SIKA® powders tailored to different hot‐pressing requirements, from ready‐to‐press granules to base powders for in‐house mixing. By selecting the right product, manufacturers can achieve dense, high‐strength SiC ceramics for demanding applications such as ballistic armor plates, wear parts, and industrial tooling.

With SIKA® powders from Kymera International, you can confidently produce hot‐pressed silicon carbide components that meet the most stringent performance requirements in your market.

SIKA® Densitec H13 Eco

These spray‐dried, ready‐to‐press (RTP) granules are designed for hot‐pressing and come pre‐formulated with sintering additives, binders, and carbon sources. They help you streamline production by reducing processing steps and improving yield, so you can more quickly achieve fully dense, high‐performance parts.

SIKA® Protect C

Developed for armor plate ballistic applications, this cohesive powder is ideal when you require robust mechanical properties and enhanced toughness. You typically cold‐press Protect before subjecting it to hot‐pressing, delivering near‐net‐shape components with superior reliability in extreme conditions.

SIKA® Sintex

If you prefer to create your own ready‐to‐press mixes in‐house, Sintex offers a versatile fine SiC base. Thanks to its optimized purity and carefully controlled surface area, you can customize your blend of additives and binders for a wide range of hot‐pressed (HP) or liquid‐phase (LP‐SiC) applications.

Production of HP-SiC components

In hot pressing, submicron SiC powders are typically mixed with sintering additives (e.g., carbon and boron carbide) to aid densification. Low levels of organic binders also help in shaping and handling. This mixture is placed in a die and subjected to high temperature and pressure, achieving near‐theoretical density and a controlled, fine‐grained microstructure.

Because it involves specialized equipment and tooling, hot pressing can be more expensive than conventional or pressureless sintering. Nonetheless, the defect‐free microstructure and superior mechanical performance justify the cost in high‐end applications such as ballistic armor, mechanical seals, and other critical components where extreme hardness, strength, and reliability are paramount.

Key features of HP-SiC components

High bending strength

Fully densified microstructures enable excellent flexural performance, making HP-SiC ideal for advanced protective armor, mechanical seals, and precision tooling.

Extreme hardness

Near‐theoretical density and minimal grain growth result in HP-SiC parts capable of withstanding severe abrasive and erosive environments.

Thermal stability

HP-SiC exhibits stable properties across a wide temperature range, offering sustained performance in high‐heat environments.
