Silicon carbide for the production of high-quality LP-SiC (liquid-phase sintered silicon carbide) components
Liquid-phase-sintered silicon carbide (LP-SiC) is an advanced structural ceramic known for its exceptional hardness and overall mechanical strength. By incorporating small amounts of oxide additives—typically alumina and yttria—LP-SiC can be fully densifi
Enhanced performance with SIKA® solutions for hot‐pressed silicon carbide
In recent years, there has been significant interest in sintering SiC nanopowders (<100 nm), as their high surface area and short diffusion pathways yield faster sintering rates and allow lower sintering temperatures. The success of liquid-phase sintering (LPS) depends on several factors, including:
- Starting powder quality: Purity, particle size distribution, and surface characteristics of the SiC nanopowder.
- Additive composition and amount: The type and quantity of oxide additives directly influence liquid phase formation and final properties.
- Mixing method: Homogeneous blending of SiC and additives promotes uniform microstructure and consistent properties
SIKA® Densitec-L granules offer a ready-to-press approach that simplifies LP-SiC component fabrication. These spray-granulated powders are doped with oxides, binders, and pressing aids, allowing manufacturers to:
- Reduce process complexity by eliminating the need for separate additive mixing
- Achieve uniform green body densities with consistent flow and compaction behavior
- Boost final material properties through precise control of sintering additives and minimal defects
SIKA® Densitec-L granules enable efficient production cycles and help ensure a high-quality finished product, even for intricate ceramic designs.
Production of LP-SiC components
Manufacturing LP-SiC typically involves the following steps:
- Powder Preparation – SiC powders are mixed with precisely measured oxide additives and binders.
- Forming – The mixture is shaped into green bodies using uniaxial or isostatic pressing, extrusion, or injection molding.
- Debinding – Low-temperature processing removes organic binders and other volatiles.
- Sintering – Elevated temperature causes the oxide additives to form a liquid phase, facilitating rapid densification and a dense, tough ceramic.
The result is a robust material suitable for components that demand high strength, toughness, and reliable performance in challenging environments.
